Statement of Need

Sleep is necessary for optimal functioning and health, and many patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and narcolepsy experience residual excessive sleepiness (ES) despite treatment. In order to avoid the negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and high medical costs associated with patients who suffer from residual ES, it is imperative that the rate of detection for this disorder increase. Clinicians should incorporate tools such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) into routine practice to determine whether their patients with OSA have residual ES.

This CME Outfitters decision-tree medical simulation features guidance, insights, and evidence from expert faculty regarding tools such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and how to incorporate it into routine practice in order to increase the rate of detection of persistent excessive sleepiness in patients with OSA.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Increase the rate of detection of persistent excessive sleepiness in patients with OSA by incorporating clinical tools such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) into routine practice.
