Statement of Need

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has the 8th highest mortality rate among cancers and viral hepatitis has driven a 38% increase in HCC in the US between 2003 and 2012. Indications for HCC surveillance includes all persons with cirrhosis, including persons who become HBsAg-positive, Asian or Black/African American males older than age 40, Asian females older than age 50, persons with a family history of HCC, and persons with a hepatitis D virus coinfection. One way to seize opportunities to educate patients about HCC is during their HBV medication refills.

The final installment in this CMEO webcast series on the role of pharmacists in improving HBV care focuses on utilizing interactions during medication refills to ask about regular monitoring and surveillance for HCC, heightening awareness of HBVr, querying patients receiving immunosuppression and about regular monitoring by their HCP, and advising patients to inform all current and future medical professionals of their HBsAg-positive status, especially if they ever need treatment for cancer or other immune disorders.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Use interactions during HBV medication refills to counsel patients about routine monitoring for HCC and HBV reactivation.

Financial Support

Supported by an educational grant from Gilead Sciences, Inc.
